Australian Government Offers Insight on Building to Preserve Data Center Power
Data is an increasingly important part of the business culture, whether that business is focused on commercial transactions or government entities. While millions of dollars spent on the data center design and operation may fit in the corporate budget, it doesn’t always fit in the government budget. This is the reality for the Australian Government, which is doing its best to reduce costs and preserve the use of data center power.
To that end, the government there has addressed cost incurring elements within the data center in its latest draft guide for the deployment and management of data centers. According to a Data Center Dynamics report, the federal government in Australia is focused on reducing data center spending. If the right measures and standards are in place, according to the federal government, it should be able to avoid millions in data center costs in the next 10 to 15 years.
Released by the Department of Finance and Deregulation, the latest document draft provides a common sense approach to locating or building out the data center space. Much of this for the government will involve converting current office buildings. It also includes the regular assessment of data center space so as to provide ample opportunity to evaluate current technologies that can improve efficiencies and operations.
Specifics within these guidelines address data center power, among other elements. Guidelines are provided for cabling and duct work to support air conditioning in the center. Construction according to these guidelines also supports the use of free-air cooling. Suggestions have been made that data centers can perform at optimal capacity with less cost when located in regions where the mean annual temperature rests below 23°C. It also helps if the humidity levels are moderate at best.
The preservation of data center power doesn’t rest solely on the shoulders of those in government, however. Public sector agencies and even those in the commercial sector will do well to select locations along the national electricity grid. If there are also two or more paths of distribution for a reduced risk of failure and lower power pricing, the burden of the power consumed by the data center is reduced.
The real point of focus for the development of data centers everywhere is that power consumption has an impact, either on the tax payers or on the bottom line when implemented by a for profit entity. When data centers are simply retrofitted inside an existing building, efficiencies are lacking that can reduce cost of operation. When new structures are built according to the needs of the entity and the new technologies available, optimal performance and lower cost are easy-to-achieve realities.
